old patient and has come to talk about his story with her mother.
PRESENTER 2: CHARLIE -Nerea-
Hello I’m Charlie ,in this podcast Emma will also respond to some questions you asked us on
our social media and we remind you that we stay on instagram, twitter, youtube and tiktok with
the name “Medical Podcast”. And now for a start welcome Emma, a pleasure to have you here
in our podcast. Could you tell us what gum disease consists of?
EXPERT:EMMA -Nerea-
Good Morning everyone, thank you for inviting me.
This is an illness that many adults suffer from. which, as it progresses, presents many
problems.
One of the first symptoms is the swollen and bleeding gums, that is called gingivitis.
The cause of this illness is poor oral care habits that promote the formation of bacterial plaque.
The inflamed gums result from bacteria that builds up in the mouth, this inflammation causes
the gum to bleed during brushing. Is it important to take gingivitis seriously and treat it
promptly.
If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to a very serious gum disease called periodontitis.
And what is Periodontitis?
Periodontitis results from bacteria that has been allowed to accumulate on the teeth and gums
allowing the inner layer of the gum and bone to pull away from the teeth and form pockets.
Over time, these pockets become deeper, filling with more bacteria and more gum tissue and
bones are also destroyed.
When this happens, the teeth are not held in place, they become loose and tooth loss occurs.
PRESENTER :KAREN -María-
Interesting, I’m Karen again, and I want to ask Emma.
Emma, could you explain the causes that generate this disease?
EXPERT: EMMA -María-
Sure! I will try to be as clear as possible .
The most common causes are :
-Poor oral hygiene
-Smoking
-Having poor eating habits with poor nutrition
-That some medications affect to your gums
-Another cause could be genetics
-And also Some diseases such as diabetes, obesity and some more
PRESENTER: CHARLIE -Nerea-
Alex , nice to meet you, I’m Charlie and since today we have you as a patient of Emma’s, and
I would like to ask you a question.
Alex, out of the causes that Emma has spoken about, which ones do you identify with ?
PACIENT: ALEX -María-
Thank you , I am also happy to be in this podcast. And the truth is that I identify with many of
those that Emma has mentioned .
I had very bad hygiene because I almost never brushed my teeth, I ate very badly and also
smoked .
For many years when I was studying abroad I had these bad habits. Also , when I came for a
doctor appointment , I went to get a follow-up after a long time and they told me that I had
diabetes and obviously I got scared and decided to visit the dentist as well.
EXPERT:EMMA -Nerea-
When Alex arrived at the clinic It was difficult to remedy it, because the disease was very
advanced so I get to the point and I started straight with curettages that consists of removing
the bacterial plaque located behind the gum that deteriorates the bone that holds the teeth.
PRESENTER : CHARLIE -Nerea-
Alex’s mother, who also suffered from these disease, will tell us her story today.
MOM OF ALEX: VICKY -María-
Hi everyone!
The truth, I was lucky to be diagnosed very soon, because i was constantly noticing discomfort
in my gums and bleeding when brushing my teeth.
My dentist recommended a special brush for delicate gums, a tongue scraper to remove
bacterial plaque, and a paste with anti plaque action from the vitis brand.
Also, I bought a water flosser to remove the interdental dirt, which was worth it because the
disease did not progress. I chose the oral-b irrigator which although it was very expensive it
gave outstanding results, so I recommend it.
PRESENTER;CHARLIE -Nerea-
That’s all for today. As usual ,many thanks to all our listeners , as well as to the users for
participating and especially to Emma for explaining to us what the disease consists of and
answering all the questions of our users, to Alex and Vicky for telling us your story.
See you on next week’s podcast.
